What is the enneagram?
The enneagram describes nine personality types, each built around a core motivation: what you most want and most fear. It was developed in the 1960s and 70s by Oscar Ichazo and psychiatrist Claudio Naranjo, and later popularised by many teachers.
- 1 The Perfectionist: wants to be good and right.
- 2 The Helper: wants to be loved and needed.
- 3 The Achiever: wants to be valuable and successful.
- 4 The Individualist: wants to be authentic and unique.
- 5 The Investigator: wants to be capable and to understand.
- 6 The Loyalist: wants security and support.
- 7 The Enthusiast: wants freedom and happiness.
- 8 The Challenger: wants to be strong and in control.
- 9 The Peacemaker: wants peace and harmony.
Your wing
Your wing is whichever of the two types next to yours on the circle scores higher. It adds its own flavour, written as "4w5" or "4w3".
A note on evidence
The enneagram has much less research behind it than the Big Five. Many people still find its focus on motives useful for self-reflection. If your top two types are close, read both and see which core fear rings truest.
Questions people ask
What is the rarest enneagram type?
There is no large, representative study of how common each type is. Figures from online tests vary from site to site, so treat any "rarest type" claim with caution.
What does 9w1 or 4w5 mean?
The first number is your type and the number after "w" is your wing, the neighbouring type that colours yours.
Can your enneagram type change?
Teachers usually say your core type stays the same, but how healthy and balanced you are within it changes a lot over life.
